About Hypertensive Nephropathy

Long term uncontrolled hypertension can cause severe damage to the glomeruli (blood vessels that filter out waste) causing the deterioration of kidney function. In Ayurveda, it is correlated with disorders of mutra vaha srotas which are the urine carrying channels.

Risk Factors of Hypertensive Nephropathy

– Obesity

Symptoms of Hypertensive Nephropathy

– Worsening high blood pressure
– Decrease in amount of urine or difficulty urinating
– Edema due to fluid retention, especially in lower legs
– Constant fatigue and weakness
– Frothy urine due to protein leakage
– Experiencing nausea, vomiting and muscular cramps.
– Shortness of breath and chest pain in severe cases

- Heavy usage of drugs like corticosteroids.
- Mansik doshas like fear, anger, stress, grief etc
- Chronic indigestion
- Excessive food intake
- Incompatible food combinations
- Habitual alcohol intake
- Suppressing the natural urge to urinate
- Excessive physical exertion

- Intake of food before the previous meal is digested

Chronic hypertension over time causes damage to the glomeruli in the kidneys due to aggravated tridosha. This leads to disturbance in the urinary channels called the mutravaha srotas causing insufficient urine production over the time due to damaged nephrons.

Additionally, the underlying dosha is balanced with appropriate diet and lifestyle changes.
